From Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Antwerp, Belgium to Hamburg, Germany to Billund, Denmark, our Euro(road)trip came to a close with a final stop in Copenhagen, Denmark. What we didn’t expect was it to not only become one of our favorite cities during the trip, but also one of the best cities we’ve visited to date!

Day 1: Billund to Copenhagen

After we finished our adventure in Billund, we drove towards Copenhagen. Before we arrived at our accommodations at the Absalon Hotel, we planned on finding the Six Forgotten Giants by Thomas Dambo. Although we attempted to find more than one, we were only successful in finding Little Tilde.

After dropping our stuff off at the hotel, we ventured over to Ørstedsparken and let the girls play at the park before heading to dinner at the Mark. After a long day of travel post Legoland and Lalandia, we were all exhausted.

Day 2: Copenhagen

The following day, we left on a mission to explore the city of Copenhagen.

We eventually wandered over to Copenhagen’s 17th-Century Old Stock Exchange, Børsen which had caught fire, collapsing the iconic spire just mere days before we arrived. At the time of our arrival, areas were still blocked off, and they were still pumping water into the building.

Since we could not visit, we continued on about 20 minutes to the Rosenborg Castle. Although we did not go inside, the grounds were beautiful and we had a great time checking out the ducks and the giant fish surrounding the castle. As we wrapped up our time on the castle grounds and started to make our way to the next destination, we were stopped by the guard marching. We watched for a little bit before continuing on our way.

The girls had a blast. On our first day at Tivoli, because of course we returned more than once, we rode on the swings, the hot air balloon Ferris wheel, and really any ride that looped around in a circle.

Once we’d had our fill of rides, we wandered over to the carnival games and then wrapped up the afternoon with a sweet treat before heading out. The girls picked out the most sugar-filled treat on the menu: ice cream cones wrapped in cotton candy and topped with other little wrapped candies. They were in heaven.

Day 3: Malmö, Sweden

The following day, we took a train over to Malmö, Sweden. We figured if we were only 40 minutes from the Swedish border, we had to make the trip. After we got off the train, we walked straight to Malmö Castle and walked around the grounds.

From there, we walked through the castle garden, Slottsträdgården. The garden had a beautiful windmill, flowers, and birds. What made the trip worth it for the girls? A playground, of course!

After visiting the castle, we headed over to Malmö Saluhall, which is an indoor food market or food hall. We found a delicious meal in the market and wrapped up our time right outside the food hall doors eating ice cream.

With our bellies full, our youngest was already sliding into pre‑nap territory. Still, we decided to press on to our next destination (probably not the ideal choice right after eating): the Disgusting Food Museum. This museum holds 80 of the world’s most disgusting foods, from monkey brains to sheep eyeball juice, we were truly and utterly disgusted. You can check out some of the foods here. Some are interesting and some are mind-blowing (like how do you even come up with this stuff kind of mind blowing?).

At the end of the museum, you’re able to select a range of different disgusting foods to try yourself. Our oldest, 5 at the time, decided to try stinky cheese, a black ant, and crickets. She was brave, we were amazed, and she’s been telling her friends (years later, mind you since I am so late in drafting this post) that she ate bugs! Our youngest was asleep and even if she were awake, there is a zero percent chance she would have tried anything.

We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the city before making our way back over to the train station to head back to Copenhagen.

Day 4: Tivoli (Copenhagen)

The next day was the day of Tivoli. The only things you need to know about this day before it’s just a complete photo dump: 1) it was a rainy, 42°F/5.5°C day, and 2) there weren’t many people there. Although rainy and cold, it made for the perfect day. We practically had the park to ourselves and rode Rutschebanen more times than we could count. Without further adieu..

Day 5: Last day in Copenhagen before heading home

The final day of Copenhagen, we were looking for a completely relaxed day since we had been running around the entire trip. We ate lunch at the hotel before hanging out at the pool for the day. That night, we hate at The Romper. Highly recommend this restaurant, particularly the pulled chicken croquettes which absolutely delicious.

Overall opinion of Copenhagen

What is there to say other than Copenhagen is a truly family friendly destination and is now one of our favorite places to visit in the world. Not only was Tivoli Gardens absolutely incredible, we loved how many things there were to do not only in the city, but also within driving distance. Whether you’re tracking down giants, visiting Legoland and Lalandia just a short distance away, or taking a quick train over to beautiful Sweden, Copenhagen is an easy yes for families with young children.
