As a preface to this post and following our latest adventure: in both 2017 and 2022, Austen and I were out of town for the first few games of the World Series and watching our boys from the comfort of a hotel room or bar. Both years, the Astros won. Ipso facto, you’re welcome and thank you to the Astros for validating our new, mid-October parents-only getaway.
This time around, I will be covering our most recent adventure to Wimberley, Texas since I believe both mid-October destinations (Pacific northwest and the Texas Hill Country) are vastly different experiences and warrant their own post. This year for our sixth wedding anniversary, Austen booked a weekend getaway (aka a glamping getaway) at The Yurtopian. Everything about our yurt was perfect; extremely comfortable accommodations, a private hot tub, fire pit, hammock, outdoor kitchen, and outdoor shower.

When we first arrived in Wimberley, we searched on our phones for a place that had a television since Game 1 of the World Series was playing. A Google search told us there were a few places that had a bar with a television, one of which was a local pizzeria called Community Pizza and Beer Garden. Google was wrong about the television (only 1-2 restaurants in all of Wimberley have one) but it was so, so right about the food reviews. We enjoyed Italian Stallion pizza, spicy meatballs, and warm spinach dip. If we ever go back, we will be going back just for the warm spinach dip which is indescribably fluffy and not like any other spinach dip we’ve tasted. While we enjoyed all of our food, we set up our phones to stream the game on the Fox Sports app but unfortunately, our boys ended up losing by one measly run.
The next day which sadly, was our only full day in the Texas Hill Country, we ventured out to the quaint, downtown Wimberley where we ordered coffee from Sip! on the Square and visited a large number of the local shops while we waited to be seated at the Wimberley Cafe. After lunch, we took a short drive to “hike” Old Baldy. Now, when I say “hike”, I just mean climb around 200 steps to get to the top. Roundtrip, it took us about 15 minutes to hike up, take in the views, and walk back down. There are good views of the hill country and with the hike being as short as it is, I would say it is worth visiting.

After visiting Old Baldy, we drove to Jacob’s Well which is an artesian spring with an intricate underwater cave system. It is a favorite swimming sport in Wimberley but unfortunately due to the horrible drought Texas experienced this past year, swimming in it had been suspended mid-summer through the remainder of the year. Although swimming was closed, it was worth the visit. The views are stunning.

After hiking, we went back to our yurt and showered off before we went out to a nice anniversary dinner at the Supper Club of Wimberley. The early-1900s music and decor, as well as the complimentary Charcuterie board set the stage for a perfect, intimate dinner. The steaks were average (we have some of the best local steakhouses to compare it to so it’s really not fair to compare here) and the sides were delicious. Our evening wrapped up with a complimentary glass of champagne in celebration of our sixth anniversary. After dinner, we went back to the yurt where we sat by the fire pit, roasted s’mores, and watched the Astros win Game 2. After the win, we turned off all the lights, walked upstairs, and looked up at the millions of stars that dotted the dark, Texas sky. A perfect ending to a perfect day.
The next morning, we had to pack up and drive back to our home. I would be remiss not to mention the breakfast we had on our way out of town. We stopped at Shamrock Tacos which upon first glance, would make you immediately drive past since the tacos are served out of a gas station. However, don’t let that fool you. The tacos left us wanting more and left us extremely content throughout the rest of our drive home.
We will be visiting Wimberley again and we have mentioned on more than one occasion, the possibility of getting a vacation home there when the girls are a little older. We couldn’t have pictured a more perfect way to spend our sixth anniversary and can’t wait to go back!
